Srikalahasti Kalamkari: Timeless Indian Art Handcrafted with Natural Dyes
The Soul of Indian Craft: Exploring the Art of Kalamkari
When we talk about the treasure trove of Indian handicrafts, Kalamkari stands tall as a timeless and culturally rich art form. With its deep roots in spirituality, storytelling, and heritage, Kalamkari is not just a textile craft—it is a living tradition that has gracefully journeyed through centuries, retaining its essence and evolving with the times.
What is Kalamkari?
The word Kalamkari comes from the Persian words 'kalam' (pen) and 'kari' (craftsmanship), meaning “pen work.” True to its name, Kalamkari is a freehand drawing and hand-painting technique used to create intricate motifs and narratives on fabric using natural dyes. Every Kalamkari piece is made with extraordinary patience, devotion, and artisan skill.
There are two primary styles of Kalamkari in India:
-
Srikalahasti Kalamkari – Originating from Andhra Pradesh, this style involves hand-drawing religious themes using a bamboo or date-palm pen. It's entirely freehand and highly detailed.
-
Machilipatnam Kalamkari – This style uses hand-carved wooden blocks to print motifs, often floral and decorative, also from Andhra Pradesh.
Srikalahasti Kalamkari: A Sacred Tradition
At IndoKrafts, we are proud to focus on Srikalahasti Kalamkari, which is deeply intertwined with temple culture and spirituality. These artworks often depict epics like the Ramayana, Mahabharata, and Bhagavatam, and were historically used as scrolls in temples to visually narrate stories to devotees.
Each piece undergoes more than 20 steps—from bleaching and softening the fabric with cow dung and myrobalan, to drawing outlines with a kalam (pen), and dyeing with natural ingredients like indigo, jaggery, pomegranate bark, and rusted iron. This ensures eco-friendliness and sustainability while preserving age-old techniques.
The Making of a Masterpiece
What makes Kalamkari unique is the human touch—no two pieces are alike. Every line, curve, and color is carefully rendered, making each work a one-of-a-kind expression of Indian folk tradition.
Steps in the Kalamkari process:
-
Treating the fabric with myrobalan and cow dung
-
Freehand drawing with a tamarind-ink pen
-
Filling in colors using natural dye baths
-
Repeated washing and sun-drying to fix the colors
