Saree weaving in Venkatagiri, Andhra Pradesh dates back to 1700 when the tradition of saree weaving was performed under the royal patronage of the Venkatagiri Dynasty, Velugoti dynasty and the Bobbili dynasty. The same craft has been practiced for generations. The ikat textile dyeing technique used extensively in these sarees, is a type of resist dyeing technique, practiced in Indonesia and produces the characteristic blurriness of the Ikat.
